7 of the Strangest (and Best) iPad Apps you May Have Missed

Odd iPad AppsSo you want to see something different do you? Every one of your friends has recommended an iPad app or 10 that let you toss disgruntled feathered creatures or instant message your heart out, but nobody has shown you something really unusual or unique.

With your permission I would like to take you on a journey through my top picks for those oddball, special apps that you will be pleased to have discovered.

iThoughtsHD 1. iThoughtsHD (mindmapping)($9.99) – Have you ever wanted to be able to visualize the thoughts in your brain in a meaningful way? Whether you are mapping your latest brainstorming session, a new project plan or organizing your notes, 90 builtin icons and 46 clipart images along with a host of task management and sharing features make iThoughtsHD one of the most unusual, surprising and helpful apps available for your iPad!
HowStuffWorks for iPad 2. HowStuffWorks for iPad(Free) – If you have 10 minutes to spare or 4 hours to waste, HowStuffWorks for iPad is your ideal companion. With over 40,000 articles, 12,000 videos along with thousands of quizzes and activities… you will learn more than you ever wanted to know about any topic you can imagine. Ranging from the completely practical to the utterly ridiculous there is something for everybody in this app!
Star Walk for iPad 3. Star Walk for iPad($4.99) – This is one of those apps that sounds like the results of a conversation that started with the words: “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” and ends with you walking around staring into the sky and using your iPad to figure out exactly what you are looking at. This app harnesses augmented reality to identify the current stars in the sky. Neat features like a past and present gallery let you see what the sky looked like at specific moments in time and a satellite tracker that allows you to see what may be flying overhead make this an app that is as unique as it is useful.
i.Decide HD 4. i.Decide HD($4.99) – There are times when we all hate having to make decisions. That, combined with the novelty and humor of random answers to your questions explains the persisting appeal of the “Magic 8 Ball”. Whether you use it for fun at your next party or let it pick the teams for your next impromptu street-hockey tournament, I am certain you can mastermind a question you want answered complete with customized responses. My personal recommendation is to create a ‘Where should we go out to eat?’ question with a selection of your favorite restaurants as the answers so that the next time you are playing the ‘I don’t know, what do you want to eat?’ game with your spouse, the app can end it fast!
Best Prompter Pro 5. Best Prompter Pro($3.99) – Do a little public speaking? Regularly give presentations? This app functions as a teleprompter, letting you craft the script and perfect your delivery. Text formatting tools and on-screen markers let you give yourself hints and directions that will allow you to really get your point across. Once you feel it’s nearly there, give things a practice-run with built-in audio recording to see how things will sound to your audience (the same audio recording functionality could also allow you to record the real thing and post it afterward for people to download). This app the best thing to happen to a speech since the laser pointer!
The World Factbook for iPad 6. The World Factbook for iPad($1.99) – Even though they won’t endorse it the truth is that this app is basically your own personal copy of the CIA World Factbook. Whether you are a geography nut or trivia junkie this is the kind of app that will satisfy your curiosities. More than 250 countries and locations are profiled, complete with maps and details on the geography, people, economy, communications, military and more! If you want to compare countries, this app can help you with that too. Best yet, the developers do monthly updates so the information stays current and relevant!
Cleartune - Chromatic Tuner 7. Cleartune – Chromatic Tuner($3.99) – Every musician with an iPad or iPhone should be adding this app to their arsenal. Billed as “a chromatic instrument tuner and pitch pipe that allows you to quickly and accurately tune your instrument using the built-in mic”, Cleartune could prove to be an app that you will soon find is indispensable. Extensive customizations can be made to really personalize and perfect Cleartune’s performance.
