Who knew the bends in a cable could cause such a stir? It would appear that a person could buy a microphone mic flex cable ribbon replacement (say that three times fast) for the iPad 3 should they feel so inclined… not that there is anywhere to put it just yet. That’s interesting in and of itself but a closer look says that this cable looks an awful lot different from the iPad 2 counterpart which suggests there may be some major redesigns in store for us when the new tablet is released.
For those of you who look sideways and cross-eyed at the internal guts and glory of these devices, the difference is described like this:
“The tail end of the part makes a “U-turn”, whereas the iPad 2′s Microphone Mic Flex Cable makes almost 90-degree turn both ways.”
The catch of course is that manufacturer replacement parts aren’t always indicative of any kind of final version of things. Often they are called upon to provide proof of concept designs that never see the light of day on retail shelves. Nonetheless it does give us a hint that Apple is hard at work and that the changes they are considering could be quite significant.
It’s all a guessing game at this point of course, but it’s kind of a fun one to play while we wait. I think it is pretty much a guarantee that we’ll see a higher resolution (2048×1536) retina display and a host of make-me-faster upgrades like a new A6 processor, more RAM and more efficient and powerful graphics card. Beyond that it would seem logical that the iPad 3 sees the same kinds of camera upgrades found in the iPhone 4S and maybe a dual-mode wireless chip supporting both CDMA and GSM.
No matter the specifics, it’ll be faster and prettier and I already want one.
