It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Every Fanboy’s Dream Come True, Superman For iPad

To fans around the globe, news that Superman has found his way to the iPad is almost more that one can take, but its true. Chillingo has teamed up with DC Comics to bring us Superman HD.

Being a decade-long comic book collector myself, I nearly squeaked with joy when I found out that an official Superman game was flying around the App Store. Visually, the game does not disappoint. There are four unlockable comic strips that tell the story of Superman’s fight against the evil forces of Lex Luthor. The comic-style graphics look like a late eighties era comic book come to life. Each mission has Superman saving Metropolis from Lex’s dastardly plans to take over the world.

The game play is arcade style. Using a virtual joystick for movement and two virtual buttons for speed boost and attack, Superman chases down villains, uses his laser vision to blow up choppers, puts out fire with his freeze breath and busts falling debris to bits with is super speed flight. Enemies approach in waves, each one more difficult than the last. Points are scored by how fast you successfully eliminate the enemy.

Unfortunately, Chillingo was a bit too premature with the release of this game. There are some pretty annoying glitches in the first three levels and the game crashes a lot. I wish I could say that Superman HD was perfect, but it’s just not, right now. The crashes make it nearly unbearable to play. Luckily, things seem to clear up around the sixth level. The movement is still pretty choppy, but at least it stops crashing all of the time. Chillingo has posted a note on the app’s summary stating that they are aware of the issue and are claiming it is relegated to “older devices,” but I played the game on an iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1. Maybe Lex Luthor hid Kryptonite in the first part of the game.

What I liked: The whole visual style is perfectly Superman. The colors are bright and the lines are bold. Superman flies through the air like he does in comics. The bonus comic strips that are unlocked as the game is played are a fun addition.

What I didn’t like: The glitches that freeze everything up and the many crashes make this game almost unplayable. With patience, you get past the really annoying problems, but when you are only 1,000 points away from getting gold on a level and it crashes on you, making you replay the whole level, it really sucks.

To buy or not to buy: Once Chillingo fixes the problems, the app will be a four-star game, but for now, it is a stretch at 3.5. If you have the patience to get past level six, you are in the clear for some entertaining Superman fun.
