Angry Birds developer Rovio announced this week that the franchise has passed 500 million total downloads worldwide in less than two years, across its three games: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio. The game has become the fastest growing game in history.
That number counts downloads on all of the devices Angry Birds is currently available on – iPhone, Android, Chrome web browser, PC, and Mac. Angry Birds is also coming soon to some Nokia phones.
Fans of the game have logged a total of 200,000 man years of Angry Birds, and players rack up 300 million minutes of playtime each day. That’s an impressive number and it’s amazing that Rovio’s physics puzzler hasn’t lost momentum.
What makes Angry Birds so successful? It was one of the first major iOS games that was accessible, simple, and engrossing. It’s a game that people of all ages and skill levels can engage in, which has turned the game into a household name.
The Angry Birds franchise has spun into retail items, with Angry-bird themed products available in many stores. Rovio is currently preparing for the launch of an Angry Birds retail shop in Helsinki, Finland, and other retail stores and opportunities are sure to follow.
Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio’s Entertainment CMO, feels that the company is more like Disney than a traditional game developer. Perhaps in the future we will see Angry Birds cartoons and theme parks. There’s supposedly a movie already in the works, set to hit theaters in 2015. Will you buy a ticket for the Angry Birds movie? Would you watch an animated series? Stay at a themed hotel? Let us know in the comments.
