TouchFire Keyboard, Fall In Love With Your iPad’s Keyboard

Many people have complained that the iPad’s native touch keyboard is too small and difficult to use for large amounts of typing. I bought a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard weeks after my first iPad purchase.

A couple of entrepreneurs have figured out a way to make the keyboard more user-friendly, without taking away your love for all things touch screen. Take a look at their prototype at Kickstarter.

TouchFire looks a lot like a keyboard cover that you set right on top of your iPad. It attaches your tablet using cover clips that allow the thin, transparent keyboard to an iPad 2 cover, but fits snuggly on your Apple tablet, no matter the generation. It rests over the top of the iPad’s virtual keyboard and, using specially engineered technology, allows you to type and swipe, as if you were touching the glass screen instead of precision-designed keys.

From the creators’ Kickstarter page:

TouchFire puts the “touch” back into typing on an iPad. You can now feel where the keys are, so you can type as fast and accurately as you can on a laptop. You can even type without looking at the screen. TouchFire cushions your fingers as you type, something both touch-typists and two-finger typists really appreciate. Typing on an iPad is no longer a pain!

The project has already met its pledge goal and will begin soon. If you want to get your hands on one of these bad boys, you should pledge now instead of waiting until they are ready for retail sales. I have a feeling that the TouchFire Keyboard is going to sell like hotcakes and supply will have a hard time meeting demand.

For $45, you can pre-order the TouchFire Keyboard Standard Package, which includes the keyboard, a storage case and a pair of black clips. For $80, you can get the TouchFire Keyboard Variety Pack, which is a great bargain, complete with two keyboards and five pairs of different colored clips.

There are other pledges you can make that will yield more keyboards, custom additions, and a good feeling in your heart for having contributed to a small business endeavor. Check it out on Kickstarter.
