Do you prefer to use Google’s Music Service over Apple’s iCloud streaming? Want to use it on your iPad or iPhone? You’re in luck, because the newly-released gMusic lets you stream your music from Google Music Beta right onto your iDevice.
While this app is designed to work on the iPhone, it’s also compatible with the iPad. As of right now, it’s the only native iOS app that allows you to access your Google Music account, so while the iPad interface may not be ideal, it’s still better than the alternative of no app at all.
gMusic allows users to play up to 20,000 songs that are stored in their Google Music accounts. Unfortunately, to access your music, you’ll have to give the app your Google information, including your password. If you’re phobic about sharing your information (I certainly am) then this is not an app you’ll want to download. If that’s the case, you can always stream music on your iDevice from Google’s web app.
After you’ve logged in with your Google account name and password, the app will display your songs, albums, playlists and more in the main menu. While accessing your music collection requires an Internet collection, the app does allow you to save songs, artists, and albums to play when you don’t have an Internet connection.
According to user reviews, there are several bugs in the app right now, complaining about crashes, login problems, and interface issues, so be aware of that before you purchase this app. The app also does not work in airplane mode at this time. Presumably, bug fixes will be added in a timely manner.
Kudos to Apple for letting this app in the App Store and giving consumers choices about what music service to use. In the coming months, we’re sure to see all kinds of apps that access Google Music in new and exciting ways. It’s safe to say that Apple’s open to allowing competitive apps into its App Store, which is good news for any other cloud-based services and apps that crop up in the future. Want to download a copy of gMusic? It’s currently available in the App Store for $1.99.
