Appease the Grandparents by Using 500px – iPad App Review

500pxI’m not a photographer, but I’m a parent. In some ways those two titles are synonymous. My talent may not be abundant, but the capacity for grandparents to complain over a lack of new photographs is.

This is the app for people like me. It’s also the app for people more talented than me. What makes it special is that it’s a photo library and photo sharing opportunity made by a community of people who actually use it.

You begin by signing up, which is a piece of cake. From there, the sky is truly the limit.

What surprised me is that 500px is as much a social network as a photo library. Join together with friends, follow photographers you enjoy or envy and share your own photos. When I first loaded the app I was completely hypnotized by the incredible photos being shared by others. Familiar features such as ‘liking’ photos, adding images to your list of favorites and offering comments are available, which make it easy to become engaged.

Some criticisms I have read suggest that this service is for professional photographers only, which is ridiculous. In fact, I think being in the company of so many talented photographers makes us rank amateurs into better artists.

The app has a few special features that really make it an experience more than a utility. View editors choice and popular images, even involve them in a slideshow set to music found in your iTunes library.

Elegant and beautiful, log-in and lose yourself for a while like I did.

What I liked: The real beauty of this service is that it doesn’t exist to the exclusion of others. It is very easy to share your images via Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter and email.

What I didn’t like: I hate that try as I might, my photographs never look as incredible as the others I see on 500px!

To buy or not to buy: The app is gorgeous, free and a perfect compliment to the 500px website. Even if you just appreciate beautiful artwork and would like to review gorgeous photographs, this app is a must-have.
