Once I got over the initial denial that it is that time of year when we start thinking about building snowmen, I really opened my mind to Snowman Joe. This is a lovely bedtime story about a sweet snowman wandering Snowman Street looking to greet the stars above.
Beautifully illustrated by artist, Michael Humphries, this book is a joy to look at as much as it is to read. Written in verse by Stefanie Fife, this story has particular appeal to younger children.
Three playing modes give you the option of choosing whether to auto play and have the pages turned for you, read to you but swiping to turn pages or reading it to yourself while turning your own pages.
This story is recommended for children ages 1 to 6, and I believe this is a very accurate recommendation. It is long enough that you will feel as if you heard a satisfying story, but not so long that you lose the attention of the younger audience.
Each page is set as a full scene, complete with a beautiful musical score that accents the text being read.
What I liked: The narrator really brings this story to life and draws you into the illustrations in a way that almost makes it feel like a movie even with very minimal animation.
What I didn’t like: If there were a few interactive features included with this book, it would add to the magic.
To buy or not to buy: I’ve always read to my daughter at bedtime, but more often we are doing this together with the iPad. This book has become a treasured classic for us and it could be for you and your child too.
