The iPad doesn’t come with a native clock like the iPhone does, so accessing world times requires a 3rd party application. Luckily, the App Store is rife with various clock apps. World Clock 3D is an all new offering that allows you to get the time in over 22,000 cities around the world, without needing an Internet connection.
That may sound basic, and it is, but this app also has one more feature to offer: An interactive 3D globe that you can spin with a finger and zoom in and out on with simple pinch gestures. The globe, rendered with accurate topography, is used to display exactly where the sun is shining on Earth.
The app opens to the globe, and tapping the “cities” button in the upper left side of the app will open a list of your chosen cities. You can add cities with the + button, and tapping a city will show you where it is located at on the globe. In landscape mode, the cities tab is always open. The time in each city is displayed in a list, and you can add as many cities as you like.
There are some customization settings, which are inconveniently located within your iPad’s settings menu. In the menu, you can change the time to 12 or 24 hours, and switch the theme from dark to light. Switching themes makes the list of cities black with white text, or white with black text. The order of your list of cities can also be customized in the edit menu, so your favorite cities are always available at the top of the list.
As Forest Gump would say, that’s all I have to say about that. This app has limited features, but if you’re just looking for a simple world clock with a comparative list of times, it may be worth checking out.
What I liked: It’s fun to look at the globe and see where the sun is currently shining in the world.
What I didn’t like: Unfortunately, there are other apps that do this same thing (globe included) that are more fully featured. There is absolutely no reason that this app should not offer alarms, temperature, and other basic information.
To buy or not to buy: The aforementioned “better” apps are also priced quite a bit lower. World Clock 3D is not priced competitively, and while it’s a good start, I would not recommend purchasing this app without an update to add more features and a lower price point.
