Boogie Down with The Cleveland Show Dance Off

Rhythm music games like Tap Tap Revolution have proven to be very popular in the App Store, and The Cleveland Show Dance Off is a similar game that features your favorite characters from Fox’s The Cleveland Show.

Even if you don’t know who Cleveland Brown is, you can still enjoy this rhythm game where your timed tapping and swiping makes him dance, spin, and move to the music.

The game starts with a character selection screen, where you can choose from one of four Cleveland Brown characters, wearing everything from his typical yellow shirt and blue pants to absolutely nothing.

Each character (Bling Cleveland, Naked Cleveland, Totally 80’s Cleveland, and Classic Cleveland) represents a different set of levels. The $0.99 app comes with 80’s Cleveland, but the other “outfits” need to be purchased for another $0.99 each.

The default level, featuring Totally 80’s Cleveland, has nine different stages, which start out easy and become increasingly more difficult. The idea is to hit the cues in time as they light up, which causes Cleveland to execute a dance move, like a breakdance spin, a leap, or a crotch grab.

Some are simple taps, but others require you to tap and slide, or to follow the button on its path. It sounds easy enough, but as the moves come up faster and faster, it can be difficult to keep up. Tapping at exactly the right moment will score you 500 points a tap, and being slightly off will score 200. Missing moves will score you zero points, and will occasionally cause poor Cleveland to drop his pants.

A high score is needed to move onto the next stage, and while it’s not too hard to get a score high enough to move on, it is difficult to master these levels and score a perfect three stars. I managed to get through the game in a short amount of time so it’s a little light on the gameplay, but if I went through to master the levels, it would take significantly more time.

There are achievements to earn as you play, and your high scores can be shared on Facebook. The game also features leaderboards, so you can compete against your friends and strangers alike to be the master of The Cleveland Show Dance Off.

What I liked: This is a hilarious game, and I loved watching Cleveland boogie down and execute all those difficult dance moves. It’s simple to learn, but difficult to master.

What I didn’t like: There’s only one music track per nine levels, which can get repetitive.

To buy or not to buy: If you like The Cleveland Show, or Family Guy, this is a good purchase. It’s a catchy, fun game. However, keep in mind that it’s short and more levels will cost you an additional $0.99.
