Enjoy a Classic-Feeling Top-Down Space Shooter with Boss Battles HD – iPad Game Review
A lot of us gamers cut our teeth on top-down space shooters, making Boss Battles HD a welcome addition to our iOS gaming library. In this game you have the chance to become a veteran bounty hunter on a mission to police the galaxy.
As with many games in this genre, you need to do a little garbage collection as you go (grabbing space gems) in order to upgrade and enhance your spaceship. Better weapons and other goodies will help you on your quest.
Guided by Admiral Grizzlovsky, a well dressed bear, you are taken through a variety of missions with a new level being unlocked as you complete the last. You start each with a briefing, though a lot of the details in those are for your entertainment more than any real assistance.
When you have completed a level you can also choose to review and purchase any upgrades you can afford. This might mean an additional pod for your ship or a better weapon. Either way, this is a huge part of the fun.
This is the first game I have played on the iPad where I was instantly transported back to the arcades of my youth and wished I was standing in front of a huge cabinet and using the classic joystick control.
Building on the success of their other games, including NinJump and Paper Toss, Backflip Studios has delivered another product worthy of our attention.
What I liked: This game has a sense of humor, which makes it a lot of fun to play. The bosses have an almost sarcastic quality that make them enjoyable to attack!
What I didn’t like: For those not familiar with this style of game it might have been nice to have a quick tutorial of some sort. Even though it might seem straightforward, I think some people might need a little guidance or strategy advice to begin.
To buy or not to buy: Even if this game wasn’t free it would be worth the download!
