Official Dead Island Map App – iPad App Review
I’ve been spending most of my spare time playing Techland’s zombie horror game, Dead Island, since it released in Early September. I like to explore every aspect of open world games, which usually means I take about three times as long as the average player to get through the game. I don’t use cheat books or user guides. I like to discover the world on my own.
That being said, the Dead Island Official Map App is on the top of my list of favorite apps right now.
I literally have the app open the entire time I am playing the game. It isn’t much more than the same map that is included in the game. The only addition is that it tells you where every collectable item in the game is at. Collectable items are Investigation Tapes, Banoi Herald Edition fact books and ID Cards. They are not necessary to the game and they do not forward the plot in anyway. However, they do unlock the achievement, “My Collectables, Let Me Show You Them.”
The app is priceless for anyone collecting these items. It is a time saver and a way to keep track of what you have already found. When you view one of the world maps- the Resort Map, for example- each item is shown as an icon. If you tap an icon, say one of the fact books, it will tell you which fact book it is, where precisely it is located (on top of the dresser in the bungalow) and will show an image of the exact spot. Once you have found the item, you can tap the “Item Collected” box and it will save it to your Items Found section. The color of the icon will also change from white to red, making it easy to see where you do or don’t need to go next.
The Official Dead Island Map App is not a guide book. It doesn’t show you were to pick up or turn in quests or give you tips on how to beat a zombie boss. Its sole purpose is to help you unlock the collectable achievement. However, by trying to collect every item in the game, you come across undiscovered areas that you may never have gone to without knowing that an item is located there.
What I liked: The graphics and music are perfectly matched with the console/PC game. The image that shows the exact spot an item is located is extremely helpful.
What I didn’t like: Nothing, the app is perfect the way it is.
To buy or not to buy: If you play Dead Island and plan to unlock the collectable achievement, it is a must-have for your adventure.
