The Travel Interpreter – Multilingual Phrasebook app will become your new traveling companion, providing a visual and audio reference for words and phrases in over 28 languages.
The app suggests that you may not even have to speak the phrases out loud when you need them, simply choose what it is you want to say and let the app speak it for you. Easy to identify illustrations accompany each phrase making it even easier to communicate with those who speak a different language.
Once you choose a language, either browse the provided category list to find the right thing you want to say or use the integrated search to make it even faster. The phrases included in this app give you the opportunity to introduce yourself, say please and thank you, make hotel reservations, find local transportation from busses to car rentals, select food and drinks or restaurants or even communicate with healthcare professionals if you fall ill.
The sound bytes are all recorded by native speakers of each language which should ensure you aren’t embarrassed by incorrect pronunciation changing the meaning of what you just said.
Several languages are included: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Russian, Bulgarian, Greek, Hungarian, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Hindi, Vietnamese and Farsi.
What I liked: The app works on your iPhone and iPad both, making it even easier to use while traveling.
What I didn’t like: The app is a rather large download, which does offer the advantage of not encountering roaming fees or data charges while away from home and needing access to the phrase database. I think they could get around this by allowing you to choose individual languages to download ahead of time because you will never need all of them in a single trip.
To buy or not to buy: If you like to travel to non-English speaking countries, or you are curious how different languages sound, this is a very handy app.
