Sid the Science Kid, from the PBS hit series, is now starring in a game available for your iPad and iPhone. Sid’s Science Fair is a lovely app aimed toward reinforcing math and science skills for children between the ages of 3 and 6.
Sid’s teaching style takes advantage of upbeat music and colorful graphics, making it very engaging for young children and a perfect translation to mobile devices.
Your children can learn along-side all of their favorite characters Gabriela, May and Gerald from the show, with instructions for the activities being spoken clearly and coming with constant encouragement and help. Three different exhibits with several options inside each gives a lot of opportunity for learning and playing.
Sid is a very inquisitive little boy, always asking questions and thinking out loud in a way that you hope your child will adopt. The language used inside this app is basic enough that younger kids will be able to understand without talking down to them.
My daughter loves Sid and I encourage that because the show teaches children to understand the world around them, using examples that stem from real life events and situations that they will really encounter.
Airing weekdays on PBS Kids, Sid the Science Kid is the result of a joint venture between Carstens Studios, PBS and the Jim Henson Company.
What I liked: As a parent I appreciate games that are fun in a way that also teaches something, especially for younger children, because so much is aimed for those that are older.
What I didn’t like: I wish there were more modules for this app, even if you had to purchase them separately as add-ons.
To buy or not to buy: If your child will be as thrilled as mine to recognize and interact with Sid, you won’t be able to turn this one down.
