Yahoo CEO Announces Her Firing via her iPad
Yahoo used to be on top of the tech world and as of late has been doing more struggling for air than innovating. Carol Bartz had long since promised to breathe new life into the once great company and seemingly failed to do so in the 32 months she had been at the helm. So it likely comes as no surprise that she has been fired.
But what is more tacky, the fact that they fired her over the phone or that she felt the need to let everybody know it happened that way?
For those of you who may not have seen it yet, Bartz announced her departure from Yahoo with the following note. The most interesting part of the text may be at the end where it shows that she actually sent it from her iPad!
To all, I am very sad to tell you that I’ve just been fired over the phone by Yahoo’s Chairman of the Board. It has been my pleasure to work with all of you and I wish you only the best going forward. Carol Sent from my iPad
It would have shown significantly more class and dignity if she had sent the note with only the last sentence.
Since the news hit the streets, reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. The Wall Street Journal tweeted that Yahoo stock had risen by 6% since the news broke, though it will be more relevant to see how much higher it stays in the longer term.
So now the fun begins. The future of Yahoo is even more uncertain and the rumor mill is running at full capacity. Some seem to think that the company may be broken into pieces and sold for parts while others think a new CEO could turn things around.
Whatever happens, I think most of us Internet veterans will keep an eye on things if for no other reason than the sentimental value.
