Adult Industry’s Support for iPad Grows with HTML 5 Video Adoption
The adult film industry rarely misses a marketing opportunity, having proven themselves to be early adopters of emerging technologies. In a press release yesterday, GirlsGoneWild.com announced their redesigned website takes advantage of HTML 5 and is now optimized for viewing on mobile devices such as the iPad.
It might strike you as odd, but I don’t think that the real news here involves the 10,000 ‘free’ videos’ they now offer on their site. To me, the interesting thing is that one of the largest adult film franchises has chosen to take their content delivery in a direction that negates the need for Flash and is inclusive of all platforms.
Their investment into mobile technology supports the trend toward using tablets and other devices as recreational companions. By using HTML 5, companies are choosing to be cross-platform and are able to completely circumvent both the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace. By going this route, they are able to provide content to their visitors from a single source and requires no adherence to store guidelines or revenue sharing via in-app purchases.
Feedback seems to indicate that visitors to the site are pleased with the changes and it makes sense that they would be. With most reports indicating mobile devices are overwhelmingly being used at home and outside of working hours, it would seem a very logical extension to provide adult entertainment in this manner. The portability of these devices makes them ideal for using in discreet locations and eliminates the need for acquiring and storing DVDs or other media.
It probably shouldn’t be discounted that this HTML 5 web application approach to adult content delivery is going to be preferable for most people. Regardless of the truth, downloading and installing a native app on your mobile device may make people nervous. Visiting a website requires far less commitment and is entirely less obvious.
So who will be next? How many companies will choose to adopt HTML 5-based content delivery instead of using Flash or even a native app installed on your device? What would your preference be?
