HP TouchPad Generating More Ad Revenue Than Android

Apparently, $99 is the magic number for a tablet. When HP reduced the price of the now discontinued TouchPad to $99, it began a bit of a frenzy, with people rushing to Best Buys and Wal-Marts all over the country to get their hands on one of the ultra cheap tablets.
Early in the morning after HP’s price drop, people began snapping up TouchPads left and right. Some people even camped out for a few hours to get their mitts on one. As a result, the TouchPad has ended up being the most profitable non-iPad tablet so far, in terms of ad revenue.
Mobile ad agency Jumptab has released a report, which shows that in a mere 10 days, the TouchPad has began generating more revenue than almost all of the Android tablets on their network. The TouchPad is within just over one percentage point of earning as much revenue as all the Android tablets in existence combined.
A discontinued, ultra cheap tablet out-performing all Android-based tablets? That’s a sad result that really demonstrates the struggle of companies producing Android tablets in an iPad dominated market.
Super cheap seems to be the key. Maybe a cheaper tablet subsidized with included advertisements would be a successful addition to the Android tablet lineup, like the ad supported Kindle that’s available through Amazon. Will Amazon release a subsidized Amazon tablet as well? I think that’s a likely possibility that may generate more interest in the Android platform.
