Logitech has released two new accessories that have our attention today, the Logitech® Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad 2 and the Logitech® Joystick for iPad. In an accessories market where there is a lot of saturation, these two look like must-haves for those of you looking to extend your tablet use a little further. This is especially true for consumers who are considering their iPad as a replacement for the more traditional laptop computers.
There are two things about the Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard that strike me as brilliant right out of the box: it is fully compatible with your Smart Cover and it unfolds to become a full sized typing surface so there is no need to ‘get used to’ a smaller keyboard. Behaving much like a case, the keyboard attaches directly to your iPad 2 and folds cleanly against the back when not in use.
When you unfold the keyboard, the iPad wakes automatically, just like you are used to with your Smart Cover. They keyboard itself charges via USB, so there are no batteries to replace. The other beautiful thing, is when the keyboard is unfolded, it also serves as a stand for your tablet, keeping it steady at a comfortable angle for working on.
Being a developer myself, the Logitech® Joystick for iPad is one accessory that has my mind really racing with possibilities. This tiny little thumb-sized joystick adheres to the front of your iPad with suction cups and claims to work with virtually any game that uses an on-screen joystick or d-pad. (Logitech has even provided a non-exhaustive list of existing games that are compatible with this accessory). The joystick comes with a little pouch to keep it safe when not in use and it is small enough I don’t think it would be too much of a hassle to carry with you when you are on the go… though I suspect it would get used most often when you are settling in for an intense gaming session.
I am not easily romanced by accessories, but both of these look like sure wins to me and I look forward to giving them a try.
The Logitech® Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad 2 ($129.99 USD) and the Logitech® Joystick for iPad ($19.99 USD) are available for preorder from the Logitech website and are expected to ship sometime in September. Good timing for the holiday season! Hint! Hint!
