iTunes Market Share of Movie Sales Increasing, Fueled by Apple TV and iPad
According to research from IHS Screen Digest Media Research, iTunes has increased its lead in the market share of online movie sales for 2011. This gain is a complete reverse of last year’s decline in market share for the same time period in 2010.
According to iSupply, the IHS report showed that iTunes’ share of consumer spending rose from 64.9 to 65.8 percent. While not a particularly significant increase, it is markedly better than iTunes’ share last year, which dropped by 11.9 percent from the previous and shows the largest revenue increase growth among all online movie providers for the first half of 2011.
Arash Amel, research director for IHS claims that Apple TV and mobile devices like the iPad’s ability to utilize AirPlay as one of the main reasons that iTunes experienced an increase in market share this year. He also pointed to the iPad’s popularity as a factor.
Apple’s iTunes currently holds first place in the market share of online video sales, significantly higher than the next, most popular site, Zune Video Marketplace. As compared to iTunes’ 65.8 percent, Zune only holds 16.2 percent, while Amazon’s video sales share is a paltry 4.2 percent.
