Prepare for Winter Warfare with SnowBall Duel HD – iPad Game Review

Okay, I might be jumping the gun a little bit here. It’s only the middle of August. But I am a Canadian, and if there is anything we are experts in, it’s snow! My childhood was riddled with snowballs, so this game immediately brings back fond memories.
Your goal is to pelt your enemies in a ‘last man standing’ style battle. Not to worry though, just like in a real snowball fight, strategy is your friend. Find yourself a barricade but be careful you don’t end up falling through the ice on one of the frozen lakes.
The interface is a little hard to master, but this is a good thing as it keeps from making the game boring and too easy. Take a little time to learn how to aim, how to knock the snow out of the bushes or the heads off of the snowmen to eliminate your enemies faster. The game also contains a number of bonuses and obstacles (such as skunks) that switch things up a little as you play.
A number of different modes add to the game-play possibilities, with each one adding a different twist. I must admit I was more than a little curious to try the one that involved dogs peeing on your snow… which you can only imagine is wise to avoid.
The graphics are spectacular. Bright and colorful and with a level of detail that makes it easy to identify every aspect of your playing field. The soundtrack is bouncy and addictive. After you have played for a few minutes, you will be bopping along and humming.
What I liked: Every so often as you are playing, an abdominal snowman pops out from the corner of the screen. Each time it happened, I laughed as he makes a funny face at you! Nothing relevant to the game, but a fun little bonus.
What I didn’t like: The vantage point feels a little awkward somehow. Even though it’s quite clearly top-down, something about it is a little difficult to work with.
To buy or not to buy: This game is a must-have for anybody who has ever enjoyed a real-life snowball fight!
