Extreme Road Trip Makes Driving A Frightening Experience
Is it too soon to make jokes about cars whose gas pedals got stuck and killed people and sent innocent victims of faulty parts to prison for manslaughter? Apparently not, because RoofDog Games has created an iPad game about it.
Extreme Road Trip is a side-scrolling auto-run game that has you in the seat of a runaway car. Your vehicle’s gas pedal is stuck and you can’t stop until you run out of gas or crash. There are plenty of obstacles to run over, but the real joy is in jumping from small hills.
Your path is riddled with valleys and hills and you earn nitro, which allows you to save on gas for a short period of time. This will allow you to get further along in the game, but only if you don’t crash first. The goal is to get as far as possible without crashing. You must use the touch controls to rotate the vehicle forward or backward in order to land each jump on all four wheels. If you rotate too far, you will flip around. But, this can be a good thing, since you earn nitro every time you successfully land a trick. Every time you use nitro, you don’t use gas. Saving on gas gets you farther along on the course, which is what you want to do.
You are given one free car and four in-app purchasable cars. There is one additional car that you can unlock by “liking” Extreme Road Trip on Facebook. Each car offers different capabilities, but are not necessary to play the game. If you are so inclined, you can download the whole lot for a mere $1.99.
Although the concept is simple, the gameplay is addictive. You will find yourself trying again and again to stick that jump you keep crashing on. The triumph of overcoming the obstacle will keep you coming back for more.
What I liked: The game is so simple and fun. There is no end to the possible tricks you can do if you practice hard enough.
What I didn’t like: There is only one background. It makes it seem like you never beat a level. Additional backgrounds and a variety of courses would be nice.
To buy or not to buy: Pick up the free version, like it on Facebook and see if you think the other cars are worth buying. I have a feeling you will.
