Apple to Sell 22 Million iPad 2s in Q4?
Is anybody buying laptops anymore? When people think mobile computing, they are overwhelmingly turning to tablets. And really, why wouldn’t they? With fantastic battery life and ultra-portablity it makes perfect sense.
Several manufacturers are cashing in on this trend, but none more than Apple. As we head into the final quarter of the year, otherwise known as the holiday quarter, Jason Schwarz predicts that Apple is expecting to sell as many as 22 million iPads… and Jason is often right.
This prediction is the result of careful calculations based on the past sales performance of the iPhone as well as the year to date iPad sales results.
By comparison, Apple sold 14.8 million first generation iPads in 2010. Some had suggested that this impressive sales figure was due to the iPad being the first of it’s kind in a new generation of tablet devices and having capitalized on the novelty factor, but Apple is showing that this tablet has chops and people just have to have one.
Sales success for the iPad can be partially attributed to the poor showing from other manufacturers. Between HP announcing the deprecation of webOS and their TouchPad devices and other Android tablet creators finding themselves on the receiving end of Apple lawsuits, there are fewer meaningful competitors. For now at least.
The possible wrench in the works of course is the much anticipated release of the third generation iPad, which could happen as early as this fall but is looking more likely for next spring. If a new device was released, these numbers could be significantly higher.
Personally, I’m curious how the potential launch of an updated iPhone may affect these sales numbers. Do you think some of the people expecting to purchase a tablet might decide to invest in an iPhone upgrade instead?
