PadGadget Weekly App Series – Apps for Fitness and Dieting

For today’s Weekly App Series we’ve found eight great apps to add to your iPad collection. We have included eight fitness and dieting apps in this week’s bundle. Our editorial team goes through the data, picks the best and most interesting apps and then brings them to you on a regular basis.

We used our PadGadget Apps Tracker to find these great apps and we’ll continue to look for the best apps on a weekly basis. Be sure to check them out because these apps might just be what you’re looking for.

This week’s category is: Fitness and Dieting

1. Target WeightTarget WEIGHT for Adults (Free) – The numbers on the scale are a harsh reality for any of us who have tried to lose a little weight, and keeping track of them may not be your favorite task. Luckily, this app makes it as quick and painless as possible. After creating a simple profile, you can identify a goal and the time frame in which you are hoping to accomplish it. Update your weight as often as you like and watch the graph track your progress. An optional app badge gives you a visual reminder of how much you have left to lose. (Target Weight also offers an app specifically designed for teens aged 13-19.)

2. LivestrongCalorie Tracker Lite – LIVESTRONG.COM (Free) – This app gives you all the tools you need to track the calories you consume as well as what you have burned with the exercise you’ve done. Combined with tools to help you balance your fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, sugar, fiber and protein intake, you have what you need to successfully set and reach your goals. This app excels because of the considerable database of food already added, saving you time and effort! (If you prefer, there is an ad-free version available for $2.99)

3. SparkPeopleDiet & Fitness Tracker (Free) – As a companion to one of the most popular fitness, dieting and nutrition websites, this app acts as a free extension to their existing suite of tools. Use their daily meal planner, fitness tracker, food and calorie tracker and review detailed reports indicating your progress and goals. As a bonus, you will also have access to thousands of healthy living articles and helpful videos. The best part is that SparkPeople is a community. If you haven’t joined SparkPeople yet, you can create your account directly within this app.

4. CrunchFuCrunchFu ($0.99) – Pretty much all of us could stand to do a few (hundred) sit-ups, and this is just the app to help you with that. By using the accelerometer this app will coach you through each abdominal crunch by sensing your actual movement. Continue doing them as you are guided through a really effective workout. Workouts get progressively more difficult as your skills improve. If you like this one, I also suggest trying SquatFu, PushupFu and PullupFu all available by the same developer and all high quality exercise companions (though I still can’t do a pullup!).

5. FitnessFitness for iPad ($3.99 for a limited time) – This is an app with a lot of strengths, including a calorie counter and body tool (which allows you to calculate things like your BMI) but the real benefit is as an exercise companion. Track and edit your training schedule and then start by choosing from over 40 professionally designed workouts with specific goals in mind… unless you want to try your hand at creating your own. Over 700 exercises, 700 instructional videos, 50 yoga poses all with audio instructions make this app a must have for anybody who needs to get up off the couch!

6. GlucoseGlucose Buddy (Free) – For many people, the reason for changing their diet may have something to do with Diabetes. If this applies to you or someone you love, consider grabbing a copy of this app. Recognized by many of the leading authorities, this app can be a part of your new lifestyle management. Enter your glucose numbers, monitor carbohydrate consumption, track insulin dosages, and record all of your activities in an effort to create a full profile for you to use as a guide to improve your overall health.

7. Grocery IQGrocery iQ (Free) – The best start to any diet is a fridge and pantry stocked with healthy foods that can be transformed into delicious meals and snacks. The problem is, if you are anything like me, you black out at the grocery store and wander aimlessly until your cart is full and then if you are lucky, those foods will later combine into something resembling a recipe. Bar-code scanning, coupon integration and a variety of list options (favorites, adding package size and quantity required and organizing items by store and then by aisle) combine to make a rather tedious task a little more enjoyable.

8. Facilitatied StretchingFacilitated Stretching ($19.99) – For anybody with a bad back or damaged knees, proper stretching can be a real life-saver. While the price of this app may scare some of you off, I believe it is worth every cent of the price when you consider the alternatives: pain and physiotherapy. Loaded with video clips and educational material that describes the muscles involved and the impact of each stretch, this app provides routines for a variety of recreation and exercise activities including running, golf, swimming, cycling, throwing and racket sports .
