Watch Live TV on Your iPad with WinTV Extend from Hauppauge

Hauppauge, the leading manufacturer and developer of TV tuner products for personal computers, has just announced the launch of a new iPad application that will allow you to watch live TV right on your iPad, over any Wi-Fi network, with all new features and settings.

WinTV Extend for iPad is an app that is optimized for the Apple iPad and can be downloaded in the App Store for no charge. The app will allow Hauppauge WinTV Extend customers to watch their favorite television programs no matter where they are.

This app delivers a customized iPad screen format, easy navigation of channel lists, landscape and portrait viewing, and better network utilization on Wi-Fi networks. Users who have recorded TV programs with a PC-based Hauppauge TV tuner can also watch the recordings right on their iPad, and like the live TV selections, pre-recorded shows can be watched over any Wi-Fi network.

The catch, of course, is that you need to have Hauppauge’s live TV system, in addition to the app, which is a TV transmitter running on a PC. The app works with any of Hauppauge’s WinTV TV tuners, which plug into a Windows based PC and connect to a users TV source, such as cable or satellite TV. Prices for the WinTV TV tuners start at $99.99.

Any user of a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR TV tuner, or users of the Hauppauge HD PVR or Colossus HD receivers can upgrade to the appropriate WinTV v.7.2 software with a one time cost of $9.95.

For more information on how to get this system up and running, visit the Hauppauge Website.

It sounds like they’re trying to catch up to Elgato’s EyeTV suite.

Certainly.  Although Hauppauge has sold quite a few WinTV cards over the years. Remains to be seen what percentage of the iPad community will react to this.

You’ll need a pretty peppy PC or Mac to encode and stream on the fly. I have a dual core AMD and I can’t stream any higher than 512 Kbps. Any higher and the PC pegs at 100% and it chokes.

They failed to go one more step with this program. I thought this will be a perfect replacement for MS Media Center but sadly it’s not. If they had Airplay while viewing on the iPad to send the video thru Apple TV to your big tv screen, would have made it perfect replacement for MS Media Center which I understand will not be included in the upcoming Windows operating system!
Besides, I had to run the “restore” because the program affected MS Excel (only ran in “view” mode) and made the Excel totally unusable!
Wasted my money buying WinTV v7.2 which cost $14.03 with shipping & handling.
