AOL Releases New Personalized Magazine App – Editions

Today AOL launched a new personalized magazine iPad app, called Editions. Like Flipboard and Zite, AOL’s Editions takes data from your social networks (Facebook and Twitter) to create an individualized news feed in a magazine style layout.

The app starts out by asking some simple questions about reading preferences. It offers a selection of categories to choose from, including subjects like news, technology, sports, arts and culture, design, and family, in addition to others. Users can choose to include all sections, or just a few.

Like Zite, Editions will learn the topics and news sources that readers access more often, and the magazine will continually tailor itself towards individual preferences. In addition, the app is very customizable, with a profile that can be used to teach the app specific user interests.

Articles in Editions are loaded in an in-app browser, displaying all original ads, content, and formatting. Unfortunately, it can be slow to load at times, but that is true of its competitors as well.

Editions is a daily magazine, meaning there is a finite amount of content available each day. This is more like a traditional newspaper or magazine and will likely appeal to some readers while being off putting to others. Also, Editions promises to always provide top news stories as well as stories tailored to reader interests, so readers won’t miss out on breaking news to read exclusively about fashion and food.

With an intuitive layout, plenty of customization options, and a real magazine-like experience, Editions is definitely worth checking out and adding to your arsenal of news apps. Get Editions in the App Store as a free download, and let us know what you think in the comments.
