Buckle Up, We’re Going Supersonic on the iPad
You know that feeling when you take the first step off a rollercoaster? Adrenaline still pumping, wishing you could go again? I don’t know if it is the high definiton graphics or the coordination with the music, but Supersonic HD has me hooked.
I’ve always been a racing game fan but occasionally they can start to feel repetitive and even slow. This is not one of those games. As soon as players hit the main menu they get a taste of gameplay, complete with high definiton graphics and fun, energetic music from the Finnish group Kitkaliitto.
There are two ways to play, Classic and Blitz mode. Don’t let the name fool you, Classic mode is no joke. The objective is simple enough: survive. Hit an obstacle and you’re done. At the top of the screen is a score counter which can be boosted by multipliers from collecting the crystals scattered around the track.
Blitz mode alone is enough reason to get this game. Players have 3o seconds to get the highest score possible, and there are upgrades called “collectibles” to aid their journey. Obtaining points in Blitz mode allows players to rack up game credits (also available via in-app purchase) to buy more upgrades.
One reason I feel some racing games can get repetitive is that usually, players are going around a track which they get accustomed to rather quickly. In both Classic and Blitz mode, gamers are sent soaring through a neon wormhole filled with randomized obstacles.
Also, most racing games follow the same principles your parents tell you when you first learn to drive: “Little movements, adjust slowly…” The list goes on. In Supersonic HD however, the standard is to go fast and hard while learning to react to what is thrown at you. Big steering movements using the iPad’s accelerometer are necessary for survival, not to mention much more fun!
There are even options to customize the soundtrack that runs while playing via the iPod icon in the center of the main menu. Additionally, once you and all your friends start playing this game you can post scores to Facebook and Twitter from within the app.
What I liked: The graphics are incredible, and the music is energetic and intertwined with gameplay which allows for total immersion. I thought I’d get dizzy from all the spinning but it was hypnotic instead.
What I didn’t like: Controls could have been a little smoother, but other than that the only part I didn’ t like was that I couldn’t put the game down!
To buy or not to buy: This game is outstanding, I cannot put it down and I doubt you’ll be able to either. The game is currently free (for a limited time) so get over to the App Store and pick it up!
