Keep Connected Using TweetCaster for Twitter – iPad App Review
Whether you use twitter for business or pleasure, you need a good tool to access it. While there are a number of options out there, TweetCaster for Twitter is a solid choice, offering a quality feature set with an easy to use interface.
The first thing I look for in a Twitter app is that it handles multiple accounts with ease. It only took me a few moments to have this app up and running with both of my Twitter accounts.
The dashboard of this app gives you a complete overview of your twitter accounts, including nearby fellow tweeters (using location services), trends and recommendations on who to follow. There is also an interface for searching as well as viewing your recent and saved searches.
By clicking the card for the account you want to work with, you are taken to your timeline. From here you can navigate to your mentions, direct messages, favorites and lists. You can filter your views to show all tweets, photos, videos or just links.
All of the nuts and bolts of a good Twitter app are there, but the beauty is in the details. When you click on a tweet you are given options to reply, retweet, favorite, direct message the tweeter or share by email. You can also choose to Zip It!, which will temporarily mute a person, trend or keyword.
When posting, you can easily choose which account to tweet from and also post simultaneously to FaceBook if you like. Adding people, photos or music to your tweets is easily done with a single tap from within the posting interface.
The other nice touch is the ability to manage your followers and who you follow. Tapping on the profile picture for a user will give you their profile, allowing you to view their timelines and mentions as well as being able to follow or unfollow them.
A lot of settings are available for customization, including which services you like to use for image posting and URL shortening. You can also choose to use Instapaper or Read it Later for saving tweets for later enjoyment or review.
What I liked: The interface is very clean, quick and easy to use. I really appreciate how you can manage multiple twitter accounts, but they are kept separate –some apps combine the views and it gets very confusing.
What I didn’t like: When you select your timeline or mentions for viewing, a notification drop-down will alert you to the number of new tweets available. This displays and disappears really quickly and I often miss it. I wish this persisted in some way. The only other complaint I really have is that when you choose a trending topic from your dashboard, if you want to retweet or reply to a tweet it isn’t clear which of your Twitter accounts you are using to do so. I wish there was some kind of prompt so you could clearly and easily select one in these cases.
To buy or not to buy: Because test-driving TweetCaster is free, you shouldn’t hesitate. When you love it as much as I do, and you want to operate a version of the app without ads, the pro version is available from the App Store for $4.99.
