Corporate Training Made Fun: DesignJot for iPad

I know when I hear the words “corporate training”, I immediately think of the movie Office Space and gray cubicles surrounding an uncooperative copier. In other words, the purest form of boredom.

I was recently fortunate enough to become employed and go through such training, and after using DesignJot, I’ve realized that it could’ve been much faster and more interesting. The tools built in to the app allow quick and simple creation of tools already used by those in the instructional design industry.

For those who have never had the pleasure of going through corporate training, it can become quite tedious rather quickly. But with DesignJot those in the business of training employees, whatever their skill level, in-depth training becomes a breeze.

DesignJot offers numerous options allowing users to create programs around the built-in “Analysis and Design” theme present thoughout the app. The analysis component is the first step to creating your presentation.

When users open the app, the ANSWER (audience, needs, strengths, weaknesses, expertise, results) methodology allows them to add, change, or delete pre-set questions that will expedite the completion of the project. Most of the questions apply to all business scenarios, so it is more than likely helpful to simply change the answers.

Once the analysis portion is completed, the extremely helpful design component comes into play. The answers given in the analysis portion are automatically filled in to the flow chart (editable) which summarizes whatever users find important to their audience.

Also included are notes and sketch features which both contain useful tools. Projects can be exported for transfer to your computer through iTunes in PDF or DesignJot format.

What I liked: The simplicity of use combined with potential of complexity combine to make a very professional app. This app would have even made meetings with “the Bobs” less intimidating!

What I didn’t like: I wish there had been a better explanation of how to use the app in each of the different ways.

To buy or not to buy: If you are in the instructional design, training, or performance consultant business you must buy this app. It maintains professionalism while giving both sides of the project the ability to maintain interest.
