iPad Web Usage Drastically Different from other Devices

iPad Use UnexpectedA report issued by bit.ly, a URL shortening and analytics service, may surprise you. While reviewing the statistics on the links clicked vs. time of day and type of device used, clear patterns emerged.

Overwhelmingly, individuals were waking up to using their computers and smartphones and staying glued to those devices through the day –but as their use waned toward the end of the work-day, people started picking up their iPads. On the weekends this adjusts slightly, with more iPad use throughout the day as well.

What these statistics suggest is that the iPad is establishing itself as a truly recreational device. The work and school days are now ended with the types of casual web surfing, news and book reading and game playing that the iPad excels at. I believe users crave the ease of use after having their brains engaged all day. We don’t want to boot laptops, plug things in, balance them on our laps… we just want a little Internet and some entertainment.

While it may be fair to say that this analysis is only a limited snapshot of Internet use, with bit.ly being the most-used URL shortening service available it gives a pretty reasonable indication of trends and practices.

Other statistics such as the types of sites most visited were not device-specific. Google, Facebook and YouTube were in the top 10 across all devices. The one puzzling discovery is that while Apple has released the iPad in 39 countries, usage was tracked from 203.

When do you use your iPad most?
