Two Worlds II™ Castle Defense employs you to defend imperial interests after Emperor Gandohar’s stronghold at Oswaroth is threatened. Using a variety of units (swordsmen, archers, necromancers, priests, royal guardians and fire mages) each with their own powers and skills, you must navigate the three campaign locations defeating the enemy forces.
This isn’t your run of the mill butt-kicking type game. There is a fair amount of back-story and a lot of features to learn. It took me quite some time before I was able to skillfully manage my units by healing, teleporting and concealing, among several other options.
The graphics are stunning, boasting dynamic character shadows, night and day cycles and a host of environmental effects such as rain and fog. As you take damage, your screen takes on a blood-spatter hue, letting you know that you’re in trouble.
For those of you preferring a quick-fix, the arena is a great way to spend 5 or 10 minutes honing your skills and getting the hang of the user interface for this game.
What I liked: The game contains time control, meaning you can play, pause or fast forward. This is especially nice to move more quickly through easier battles instead of waiting ages for enemies to approach. It is an added bonus that you can manage your units even when the game is paused.
What I didn’t like: I found the user interface to be a little confusing and had some difficulty catching on. While I would play the game easily, I wasn’t playing it well –until I reviewed the tutorial.
To buy or not to buy: The $4.99 price tag may scare some people away, but there is a lot of game-play here combined with beautiful graphics and a sophisticated story-line. For fans of the genre, this game is a good purchase.
