Apple Working on Fix for Security Hole in iOS Software
On Wednesday, the German Federal Office for Information Security warned that “critical weaknesses” in Apple’s software could expose users of iOS devices to theft of their personal data.
The flaw involves clicking on an infected PDF file while using the iOS operating system, which can infect devices with malware. The security flaw exists on iOS 4.3.3., but don’t worry, the folks in Cupertino are already hard at work on a fix.
According to the Associated Press, Apple spokeswoman Bethan Lloyd announced this morning that Apple is “aware of this reported issue and developing a fix that will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.”
No specific release date for a fix was mentioned, but expect it to be soon, because Apple is serious about security, and the flaw was named a “critical weakness” by the German agency.
The fix will disable the most recent jailbreaking method, which happens to take advantage of the same exploit involving PDF files.
While no attacks have been made, it’s advisable not to open any unknown PDFs on your Apple device, through emails or websites until a fix is available.
