Sandra Boynton’s books are fixtures in our home, which means I am delighted that they are making their way to my iPad and iPhone. Her books are colorful, clever and the perfect length for capturing a toddler’s attention.
In Blue Hat, Green Hat, developed by Loud Crow Interactive, all of the standard interactive book features are present, including the choice to read it yourself or have it read to you. As you move through the story, you can participate with the illustrations in ways that are contextually relevant. For instance, when the characters are putting on articles of clothing, you can swap them for another color or pull them up over their heads (and as you do so, the narrator will echo what you’ve done).
The style of the book on your screen is a bit unique. Instead of being ‘full screen’ on your device, it looks as if it is an actual book resting in your virtual lap. You can see more photographic style images surrounding it as you flip through the pages, which really makes the animation of the characters special because it feels like the book is coming to life.
What I liked: This app is every bit as charming as the original printed book, and offers the kinds of interactions that actually compliment and enhance the book.
What I didn’t like: With several of her books already brought to digital life (and I am hoping more are on their way), it would be nice if they could all be accessed using a central app.
To buy or not to buy: If you already own these books in print, it may be hard to justify re-buying them again for your digital devices –though I saw enough value in this one that I promptly purchased the other two titles currently available for myself as well.
