I’m not one to put gender roles on toys, but if there was one way to describe Trucks & Skulls Nitro HD by Appy Entertainment, Inc. it would be to call it the male equivalent to Angry Birds. This game has over 200 levels within six different episodes with such names as, Demon Town and Haunted Wasteland. You control a monster truck named Thrust Monster and it is your job to knock down the stacks of wood, metal, TNT and whatever else will be used to keep you from your task of destroying the skulls.
You can modify your truck with the gold you win from the achievements you earn. You can also buy cheat keys that will allow you to unlock all levels in an episode without having to play through each one. If you are really into this game, you can spend a few coins to get wallpapers for your iPad that utilize the game’s artwork.
Earning gold takes a while, even with all of the achievements available, but you can buy additional coins with real money for anywhere from $1.99 up to $24. 99 for 2400 coins if you really want to push your game to the max.
The game play itself is like any other physics-based game. You aim, rev-up your engine and launch the truck in the general vicinity of the tower. In this game however, you can use your nitro in mid-launch to give you that extra power to get across the field.
Being an app reviewer, I’ve played a whole lot of physics-based games. I was over it before Angry Birds even hit the scene. They are all alike when it comes to game play. There is really nothing new to be said about it. Now that you know my feelings about these types of games, you will realize how awesome Trucks & Skulls Nitro is when I say that it is the best physics-based game I’ve ever played. It is full of bone-crushing metal and guitar shredding metal, explosions, monster trucks and the complete annihilation of everything. The soundtrack is heavy and the sound effects are hilarious.
What I liked: The non-cutesy aspect. I love cute games just like the next girl, but it is so refreshing to see a rough-and-tumble game every once in a while. This is a great twist on a much-used game style.
What I didn’t like: I don’t like the in-app purchase concept here. You are already paying for the app, albeit a very inexpensive app. You should not have to fork over additional cast in order to take advantage of all that the game has to offer. It is possible that earning coins will happen at a quicker pace as the game progresses, but at the beginning, you are not even earning one coin per level. At that rate, you wouldn’t even earn enough coins to buy one truck mod.
To buy or not to buy: This game is pretty awesome. Some people, like me, may be getting bored with physics-based games, but don’t dismiss Trucks & Skulls Nitro as being just like the others. If like flaming skull imagery and random explosions, give this game a try. You will have a lot of fun.
