Apple Projected to Sell 14.4 Million iPads in Q3
According to Hong Kong based research firm CLSA, Apple’s going to be selling a whole lot more iPad 2’s in the third quarter of the year. 14.4 million, to be exact. This is well above the projected 10 to 12 million units.
CLSA cites LCD sales from DisplaySearch as the basis for this statement. LG Display and Samsung shipped a total of 5.3 million 9.7″ displays in May, a size only used in tablets. Of those, 4.8 million were designated for Apple.
That’s a lot of iPads, especially compared to the lackluster projected numbers of the BlackBerry Playbook and other similar tablets. We sure love our iPads!
Of course, this is just speculation. Apple has missed iPad sales estimates in the past, mostly due to supply restraints. However, as of September, supply should be catching up with demand, allowing Apple to sell the projected 14.4 million iPads. CSLA warns, “Keep in mind that AAPL has missed iPad consensus in 2 out of the last 3 quarters, even when supply chain forecasts were higher.”
Even if Apple only sells the projected 10-12 million, it’s still a huge increase from the 3.27 million iPads they sold in the third quarter of 2010, and the 4.69 million from the second quarter of 2011.
CLSA’s research also suggests that we may see a 4G LTE-compatible iPad model ahead of the coming holidays this year.
