Space Miner HD – iPad App Review

Space Miner HD appears to be a simple arcade-style space-themed game on the surface, but it really has a lot of layers making it quite sophisticated and a lot of fun! Guide your spaceship through 48 different sectors, collecting treasures and earning some of the over 60 Game Center achievements while improving your in-game skills and customizing your ship.
As you play the game, and the story unfolds, you bear witness to over 100 scripted scenes featuring the game characters. The graphics are quite spectacular, crisp, clear and very detailed.
Gameplay is simple to get the hang of, with two on-screen controls –one controlling your direction and the other propelling you forward. Obstacles in the form of asteroids clutter your path and must be shot and destroyed as you look for the materials you need to progress through your missions.
What I liked: I wasn’t able to finish the game easily, even after spending considerable time playing and not losing interest. The game advertises that once you do finish the game, there is a value-added ultracore mode that lets you play through again without losing all of the technology you acquired the first go-around.
What I didn’t like: The scripted scenes in between missions were a little long for my taste and I wanted the option to skip through them. I didn’t feel my game-play was enhanced by knowing the storyline.
To buy or not to buy: At $4.99, this is one of the more expensive games I’ve played. It is a lot of fun, the graphics are excellent and the ultracore mode gives you a second encore play of all the levels, which offsets the price you have to pay.
