i3D: An Impressive Head-Tracking 3D Demo on iPad and iPhone

Over the last couple of months, a team of researchers based in France has been working on an innovative glasses-free technology to bring three-dimensional effects to the iPhone and the iPad. The technology uses head tracking mechanisms to calculate what the picture on the device’s display should look like, based on the location of the user’s head.

As a result, both iPad and iPhone are able to offer 3D, without the need of a special screen, or glasses.

The demo has now been released to the public, and is available on the App Store. Named i3D, the app offers five different demos, and each one of them is nothing short of impressive.

The app is compatible with the iPad 2, as well as iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch. First generation iPad owners, the demo is simply incompatible with your device, as it requires a front camera to work.
