Improve Your Spatial Reasoning with Pictorial HD – iPad App Review

Pictorial HD is an educational game that purports to improve your spatial reasoning skills. Spatial reasoning is a skill in which you can identify patterns and imagining transformed objects, particularly those needing rotation or observation from a different point of view. It is often used in determining IQ as well as exercising your brain for mathematics, physics and computer science.
The premise of the game is very simple, you are looking into a night sky filled with stars and in the constellations are obscured pictures. In a race against the countdown timer, you must determine what that picture is and twist and rotate the stars to bring the picture to clarity. The user interface is very easy to work with, you can twirl the constellations with your fingertips until they are in the right position. As you run out of time, the game will allow you to ask for a hint which will show you the solved puzzle… but that kind of takes the fun out of it!
As you progress through the puzzles, they get more difficult to solve. There are 3 different storylines: Night City, Arctic and Treasure Island
What I liked: I like to exercise my brain and this app allows me to do just that. The graphics are well done and there was no motion blur.
What I didn’t like: When solving several of the puzzles I would identify the image long before I could fuss with rotating the constellations into just the right position in order to actually pass the level. This was a bit frustrating because I should have scored better than I did.
To buy or not to buy: I like that it is educational in a way that I haven’t seen in an app before. I would definitely give it a buy and see how you fare against the other high scores!
