Kung Fu Panda 2 Storybook- iPad App Review

With the upcoming sequel to Dreamworks hit movie Kung Fu Panda, there are plenty of tie-in toys, games and other merchandise hitting the marketplace.  FrogDog Media’s newest release, Kung Fu Panda 2 Storybook, is not just another action figure to be left on the floor and subsequently stepped on by dad in the middle of the night. This e-reader is an educational app as well as a promotional tool. Plus, it doesn’t take up any space in Jr.’s toy chest.

The e-reader takes images straight from the movie and tells the story of Po’s search for inner peace. High-quality pictures of the Furious Five, plus new enemies to discover, fill the pages of this book. The read-along narration includes the voice of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and others who have lent their talents to the movie.

Similar to other e-readers, the user has the choice to have the book read to him, with each word being spoken highlighted along the way. The book offers users an “Auto Play” mode which progresses through the story on its own.  It also has a “Read to Me” option where the book is narrated, but the user dictates when to turn the page.  Finally, “Read It Myself” leaves the user in charge of all aspects of the book.

In addition to the book portion of the app, Kung Fu Panda 2 Storybook offers a digital sticker book where you can create your own exciting movie scenes and play out fights between good and evil, or, just have members of the Furious Five spar for a while. With over 30 digital stickers, there is no end to the fun of the Create-a-Scene feature.

The app is universal. You can download it from your iPhone and use it on your iPad as well. SO, if you have two little ones, they will only fight over which one gets the bigger screen.

What I liked: I remember collecting stickers as a kid. I loved creating my own adventures on paper, but always hated it when the stickers were used up. The Create-a-Scene feature allows kids to do the same thing, but you never run out of stickers. Also, I just love hearing Jack Black. Even portraying a clumsy Dragon Warrior panda bear, Black’s animated voice makes me giggle when I hear it.

What I didn’t like: Nothing, really. The graphics look great on the iPad and the extra features make the price tag reasonable. It’s a great app.

To buy or not to buy: This is a buy for sure. If your kids are looking forward to Kung-Fu Panda 2, this app will surely get them all antsy-in-their-pantsy for its May 26th release.
