All-In-One IM with IM+ Pro – iPad App Review

If you are anything like me, you have an account on most of the major social networking sites but you don’t want to have to use a dozen separate apps in order to take advantage of them. IM+ Pro allows you to manage your social networking life by combining all of these services into one!

Adding an account is very easy, just choose the service and configure.  You can choose on a per-account basis whether to keep chat history, clear existing chat histories and enable or disable the push new email notifications. Once added, you can also decide whether to turn individual accounts on or off –so you can configure them all but only use the ones you want to.  It is also handy that you can add multiple accounts per service.

This app comes with all of the features you would expect in an IM client, including typing notifications, avatar support, copy/paste and customizable backgrounds.  What sets this app apart are the extra features, including your chat history being available online (at https://plus.im) as well as in app, group chat, geo-location (allowing you to post status messages that show your friends where you are), built-in browser for viewing links sent by contacts, and the neighbors feature.  Neighbors allows you to locate your friends on a map as well as locating new friends based on where you are.

What I liked: I was impressed at the number of social networking sites that are supported, including: Skype, AOL, MSN, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo! Google Talk, Jabber, ICQ and MySpace.

What I didn’t like: I know I am a little old-school, but I wish IRC was also supported.

To buy or not to buy: I have used a lot of all-in-one IM apps and found most of them to be more frustrating than helpful.  IM+ Pro has a rich feature-set and proved very stable in my testing, making it worth the purchase price for anybody who has a lot of accounts to manage.

Did you actually ever get Yahoo IM to work?  I’ve had this app for a month and it NEVER connects to Yahoo IM – ever!  Beejive works flawlessly.  Conects every single time without fail.  Both on iPhone and iPad.  I don’t like the layout of the Beejive iPad app though.  Too cluttered.  IM+ Pro looked to be a very slick iPad app, but it just doesn’t seem to work.

I have been using IM + for iphone for years. It occasionally runs into issues when FB changes things, or Yahoo, etc., but they have always fixed them. Beejive is insanely expensive and uber cluttered. the interface on IM + is quite nice…
