Samsung’s New Display Technology Making It to iPad 3?

The iPad 2 has only been in the market for just over two months, and rumors about the iPad 3 are already indicating Apple’s focus on the much awaited Retina Display.

Earlier this year, reports indicated that a third-generation iPad would be the one featuring a 2048×1536 display. However, Samsung’s announcement for its new ultra-high-resolution display have many wondering if the new 2560×1600 resolution will be the one making it to the iPad 3.

Samsung unveiled yesterday its plans for a new ultra-high-resolution display that will be shown at the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium in Los Angeles next week. Based on the current specifications, Samsung’s new display definitely surpasses any other tablet screen currently on the market. The new display features a 2560×1600 resolution and a pixel density of 300 dpi.

But, will Apple take advantage of Samsung’s new display technology? After all, Samsung has supplied other components to Apple for the iPhone and iPad before.

Earlier this year, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that iPad 3 will be the one to deliver the highly anticipated Retina Display with a high quality resolution of 2048×1536. He also reported that the third-generation iPad will incorporate a 9.7 inch IPS panel with FFS (fringe-field switching) technology, which will bring us a wider viewing angle and incredibly clearer visuals even under sunlight.

Apple has been quite clear about keeping the iPad line on the 9.7-inch displays. Unless Apple plans to increase the size of the iPad, the new Samsung display will only be used on new variants of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. In addition, if Mr. Kuo’s reports are true Apple will simply focus on offering a screen with exactly twice the resolution of the iPad/iPad 2 (2048×1536 display).

The new Samsung display is certainly targeted at beating Apple to the market. Unless Apple surprises us in the coming months with an iPad 3 announcement, it seems that Samsung will launch a new display for its Galaxy Tab line before Apple introduces the much awaited Retina display on the next iPad. Stay tuned, I’m sure Apple has many more tricks to reveal.

Frankly latest ipad 2′s display looks awesome.. doubled resolution display might come at the cost of battery life as it has to light up extra pixels I am sure. But this should not really hold people from getting the latest ipad 2, because the present display resolution is not bad at all.
