‘Hey, That’s My Fish’ Comes to iOS – iPad App Review

Based on the board game of the same name,  Hey, That’s My Fish! HD by Fantasy Flight Games is a hit with strategy gaming. It’s original and fun with hours of replay value. The game is easy enough for kids and challenging enough for grown-ups.

The game starts off with a tutorial that gives the basic rules of the game.  You can either play against 1-3 computer generated characters, or 1-3 other people as a play-and-pass game. The point is to get as many fish off of the board as you can before your four chilly penguins get munched on by a passing whale. As you move off of one tile into another, the tile you just left will sink into the sea, potentially leaving a gap that your opponent cannot cross. As the tiles fall, there are less and less options for moving and eventually, hopefully, you have locked your opponent’s penguins onto their death-berg. The one who collects the most fish before all penguins are off the board is the winner.

While the game can be played easily and without any forethought, it has an undercurrent of strategy that gives the game depth. It is not unlike a game of checkers, where you can play it blindly, but if you put some thought into it, you can really wipe the board.

There are 15 landscapes that you can unlock by achievements such as, “Win five games against three opponents,” or, “Watch a four-player computer game.” There are three levels of difficulty and the option to play against as many as three other players. With all of those variables, this game is a winner.

This app is also available for the iPhone for $4.99.

What I liked: The art is cute. I love penguins. The game is easy enough to not get frustrated with, but not so easy that you never want to play it again. I love the landscape unlock achievements. It is much more than simply beating a level. You have to know what to do in order to unlock a landscape.

What I didn’t like: The price seems a bit high. There is nothing else, really, that I didn’t like. It is a pretty great board game-style game.

To buy or not to buy: If you like checkers, you should check this game out. At $4.99, it may be a little bit pricey. There are not a whole lot of features, even though the game has a really high replay value. But, it is worth it if you love strategy games.

I never thought of comparing this to checkers, but I agree there are a few similarities. I hesitate to limit recommending this game only to people who like checkers though.

As far as the price, while it may be high for a video game version, it’s still a lot less than the actual board game version.

Good point Gary. It is way cheaper than the board game, and you don’t have to wait for it to be shipped to you.
