Paper Train HD Gone Free Today Only – iPad App Review

In association with freeappaday (FAAD), Paper Train HD is free today only. Normally $2.99 this game is an original and fun time management game with creative graphics that is a must-have for every iPad owner.

First released for the iPad in February of this year, Paper Train HD released for iDevises to much fanfare. The game had already gained popularity as a free online game and lovers of the addicting game jumped for joy when it became a universal app.

Your goal is to conduct train traffic, avoiding cows and collisions. As trains come down the track, you select red for stop or green for go. Two or more trains will cross each other on separate tracks and you must know which train to stop and which to allow to continue on. Watch out for cow though. If they walk across the tracks in front of a train, splat! You can redirect wayward cows by giving them a loving tap.

There are thirty different levels and four different difficulties. Points are scored on how many times you have to tap the screen (to change the trains’ motion or redirect cows) and how many cows you keep from getting smashed by the trains. If any of your trains crash, you’ve failed the level.

When you pass each level, you are given the option to change the difficulty of the next level, post your score to the internal score board and return to the main menu to select a different level that you have already unlocked.

The graphics are original, hand-drawn style on what looks like graph paper. It has a doodle game appeal, but has a lot more artistic intent than just stick-drawn art.

What I liked: The graphics are amazing. Each hand-drawn train has it’s own look. The buildings look like top-down views of an architect’s set of plans. The cow wrangling aspect is pretty cute, too. When you tap them they moo. If you don’t save them, they make a splatter sound. The game is addicting and has a high replay factor.

What I didn’t like: This game would be great in Game Center.

To buy or not to buy: Since it is free today, it is a definite buy, but even at $2.99 it will give you hours of game play.
