VH1 Releases VH1 Co-Star for iPad

MTV Networks brings you VH1 Co-Star, the app that value-adds to your favorite VH1 television shows.  While MTV describes this app as being ‘like a DVR for social commentary’, I prefer to describe it as a companion to your favorite television entertainment. Everything is more fun when you do it as a group!

Co-Star offers additional video footage, photos and trivia as well as badges (achievements earned by answering trivia questions). In addition, you can interact with others who love the shows you love using your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts –choosing to post only in the Co-Star interface or to those social networks as well.

There are a number of little details that make this app special. Using the WatchWith feature, it uses your GPS to identify your viewing time zone so you can watch your shows ‘with’  your online friends. This way if you are reading live comments, even if they were posted earlier they will be cued to the corresponding moment in the show for you.

When you first load the app, you will be able to see which show is currently on the air and which one was next.  This adds to the element of engagement, because I felt drawn to watch the current show as well as the next show, and to work toward earning achievements just to see them appear on my screen.

What I liked: The idea is neat –unfortunately is only limited to shows on VH1.

What I didn’t like: The interface is a little difficult to intuit. While you can earn achievements (in the form of badges), this app is not linked into Game Center.

To buy or not to buy: The value of this app rests on whether you are a die hard fan of any VH1 shows. If you can’t live without them, you can’t live without this app.
