Bug Heroes for iPad and iPhone – Game Review

Many good iPad games are lost in the slew of tower defense games but Bug Heroes, a combination tower defense, action-adventure, and shooter, stands alone. After glancing at the screenshots in the app store, you’ll be astonished to see that the price of this game is only: free. This is only for a limited time of course, so act fast!

After you hastily download this amazing looking game and open it as fast as your fingers will allow, you realize instantly that it is going to be a good day.  The menu screen alone comes with impressive graphics and once you wipe the drool off your face it’s time to start playing. At the top of the menu is “adventure” mode, where players advance through waves of enemies.

When you first start your adventure (I’d suggest in Easy Mode) you find yourself in a kitchen setting with only one playable character known simply as: “Ant.” The tutorial brings you right up to speed on the controls and shortly afterward, the storyline. Beetle is the first character Ant befriends and the fearsome pair’s specialties are explained in detail. Now we meet Spider, the third and final free character. Players are eased into all aspects of the game, but don’t let the slow start fool you, the game gets much harder very quickly.

The second way to play is called “Coliseum,” where only one player is selected and a gladiator-type death match ensues. In this mode, it is much easier to buy all the upgrades for your selected character, so it is a good way to familiarize yourself with all the ins and outs of their abilities. Also, if you really get into the game, you have the ability to buy extra characters that are more powerful than the original three.

Awards, achievements, and scores can all be posted to the Game Center to compare yourself to all the other gamers and give you another reason to keep playing this exceedingly fun game (not that you needed one).

What I liked: The graphics are stunning, especially for a free game. The numerous combinations of upgrades leave room for hours of game play, and although it may take a few tries to get the right grouping the game gets really fun when you figure it out. The auto-save feature lets you exit the app at any time and come back right where you left off.

What I didn’t like: The fact that all the extra characters cost money. I couldn’t figure out the purpose of “points” in the game, but maybe they should be used to buy the extra characters.

To buy or not to buy: Since the game is currently free, I would go so far as to say delete one of the apps already taking up space on your iPad and make this your game of choice.
