iFixit Tears Apart iPad 2 WiFi – Take a Peek at What’s Inside
The great folks at iFixit were at it again yesterday and flew out to the East Coast to get their hands on the iPad 2 as early as possible. With a new iPad 2 in hand, they did what they do best and that’s of course tear it apart piece-by-piece!
One of the their more interesting finds was the fact the iPad 2 comes with a 1GHz dual core A5 processor with 512 MB of memory. Apple kept us in the dark as to the exact processor speed and memory amounts in the new iPad 2. As has already been reported, both cameras are low resolution so you’re iPad 2 is not replacement for your digital camera, but I doubt very many people were expecting their iPad 2 to be a point and shoot alternative.
Although Apple put in a larger speaker port on the new iPad 2, the speakers are smaller than the original iPad’s. However, in our casual sound test we found the iPad 2 seemed louder and clearer than the original iPad.
On a more worrisome note, the new larger glass front on the iPad 2 may be beautiful, but the glass is thinner and lighter than what iFixit found in the original iPad. The thinner glass may be more prone to break when dropped compared to the thicker glass in the original iPad. We recommend users keep an eye on their iPad 2 and give it some extra TLC until we hear how well the glass holds up in the field.
