iPad Controls Virtual Helicopter Using Augmented Reality

To pull off this augmented reality demo, Russian company AR Door used software from Total Immersion to create the helicopter and then coupled it with video viewing glasses from Vuzix to complete the effect.  The software can detect when a person interacts with the iPad and can also track the iPad’s movement.  Using the iPad, users can rotate the helicopter, zoom in and out, change its colors, switch to an exploded view or even have the helicopter launch missiles.

Yesterday we talked about TripAdvisor’s new augmented reality iPad feature and how we’re about to see an explosion of augmented reality apps hit the App Store with the release of the new iPad 2.  With the addition of a camera, the new iPad 2 will finally allow users to interact with their surroundings in exciting new ways using augmented reality.

iPhone users have been able to enjoy a number of apps that combine augmented reality with video from the iPhone’s built-in camera. We’ve also seen several apps start using the iPhone 4′s front facing camera to capture a users face and allow them to change appearance or add accessories.  With the iPad’s larger screen, we expect several of these types of apps will quickly jump on to the iPad 2 bandwagon.
