Adobe to Update Packager Software for iPad?

Is it possible? Is Adobe about to release an update to their Packager software so that developers create iPad apps?

The issues between Apple and Adobe have been well documented. We know that Adobe has continued their development of the “Packager for iPhone” application. Their goal has always been to establish a framework that would allow Flash developers to develop and deliver applications for iOS devices.

According to Japanese blog Macotakara, Adobe is not only planning to upgrade their “Packager for iPhone” (implemented on Adobe Flash Professional CS5), but also plans to issue an update so that developers can create iPad apps. According to the rumor, the update would also allow Flash developers to implement gestures like pinching in their apps.

We know about the device fragmentation that exists today across the mobile market segment. Not too long ago, Apple lifted its restrictions on third-party development tools used to build iOS apps. Since then, many mobile developers have used Packager to distribute their applications across different mobile devices.

Is Adobe about to make a move to facilitate iPad apps development?

The iPhone Packager was updated for work on iPad’s in June 2010. Apple was blocking apps made with Adobe’s iPhone packager at that point, but I imagine the work had already been done so they added that to the update.

Just go to Adobe’s Flash CS5 support page and the first update mentions that it includes iPad support. That said, the iPhone Packager is fallen behind the Android support which supports AIR 2.5 API compared to the iPhone Packager that supports just AIR 2.0. So an update is likely in the works, but this rumor seems to be way off.
