Verizon Announces CDMA iPhone 4 Will be Available Feb. 10
After months of rumors, Verizon officially announced that Apple’s iPhone 4 will be available on the carriers network beginning February 10. The modified version of the iPhone 4 provides CDMA support and will allow customers to use Verizon’s nationwide CDMA / EVDO network.
While the Verizon version of the iPhone 4 will have all the same capabilities as the GSM / UMTS iPhone 4 sold by AT&T, it does add a new feature. The Verizon iPhone adds new Personal Hotspot capabilities to the iPhone allowing customers to use iPhone 4 to connect up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices. This option is currently not available from AT&T and has been one of the most requested features by current iPhone owners.
“Verizon Wireless customers have told us they can’t wait to get their hands on iPhone 4, and we think they are going to love it,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer. “We have enormous respect for the company Verizon has built and the loyalty they have earned from their customers.”
Verizon announced the new iPhone 4 will include FaceTime but there is no word if it remains limited to WiFi or if it will be enabled on Verizon’s EVDO network. Users will also have full access to the over 300,000 apps available in the Apple App Store but some apps may need to be modified as Verizon’s CDMA based network does not currently support the simultaneous use of voice and data. This could impact apps which make use of Apple’s telephony features.
Verizon said existing “qualified” customers will have the exclusive opportunity to pre-order the iPhone 4 on February 3, ahead of the general public. The iPhone will sell for $199.99 for the 16GB model and $299.99 for the 32GB, both phones require a two year contract. The phones may be ordered from an Apple Retail Store or Verizon Store beginning Thursday, February 10.
