Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue for iPad – App Review

Choo!  Choo!  Callaway Digital Arts and HIT Entertainment have partnered to bring Thomas and his friends to the iPad in a big way!

Thomas & Friends:  Misty Island Rescue for iPad includes five engaging options sure to keep kids amused and entertained.  Together with their parents or all by themselves, kids will enjoy Thomas, Percy, Sir Topham Hat and even some new friends in this fun story and game app.  Simply tap the railroad sign at the top of the screen and the gate appears with the option buttons:  Home, Book, TV, Paint, Puzzle and 123.

In “Book” mode, Thomas and the train engines are busy working together to build the new Sodor Search and Rescue Center. Thomas is rewarded with a trip to the Mainland after helping when Diesel gets into trouble.  During the journey, Thomas gets lost at sea and finds himself on an unfamiliar island, where he meets the Logging Locos: Bash, Dash, and Ferdinand.  Together they help Thomas find his way home but not before experiencing some adventures along the way!   Tap the mini Thomas at the bottom of the screen to select specific pages and turn narration on and off.

“TV” mode is an entertaining music video for kids.  Watch as the trains chug around the island and sing along with the catchy tune. “Misty Island Rescue, here we go…”

The fun doesn’t end with just reading and watching in this Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue app, but continues on with three play modes: Paint, Puzzle and 123 (dot-to-dot).  Tap the mini Thomas on the tracks at the bottom of the screen to view all the options in each of these modes.

”Paint” mode includes ten different pictures, 18 colors and three brushes allowing kids to create their own beautiful picture.  You’ll also be able to save their special images to Photos and share them with family and friends later.

“Puzzle” mode gives kids a choice of five puzzles containing either six (easy) or twelve (hard) pieces.  Tap to start, drag and drop pieces into place and then watch the scenes come to life once complete.  Kid

Finally, select from three pictures and two levels of difficulty in “123″ mode and numbered dots appear.  As kids tap the numbers in the correct order, lines are drawn from dot-to-dot to create the picture they selected.  A great way to practice counting and have a good time while doing it!

What I liked: This app combines five entertaining activities into one package.  The graphics are incredible and the interactive features make it loads of fun for kids to play.

What I didn’t like: Nothing!

To buy or not to buy: Yes!  This wonderful new app is everything we expect from Callaway and we’re sure young kids will love it.  It’s available in the App Store now for the introductory price of $4.99.

    Both of my sons love this app. I had been impatiently waiting for a Thomas book app to arrive on the scene and this did not disappoint – it was even better than I expected. The puzzles coming to life was a nice surprise and the graphics were really slick. My only complaint is that the page-turning is kind of fussy and very often turns to the next or previous page by accident, which can be frustrating for little ones (and their moms).
