PadGadget‘s neighbor, Dallas-based id Software, launched an iPad and iPhone version of its highly-anticipated first-person shooter RAGE yesterday. Called Mutant Bash TV!, the game takes place in a post-apocalyptic era, where the player participates in a game show to battle against mutants. The story is similar to Stephen King’s book (and movie) The Running Man, but takes place in a very different worlds, where humans are nowhere to be found.
Mutant Bash TV isn’t your typical game show. The goal of the game is to put your life at risk in order to make money, as you have to found your way through an underground world full of zombies and mutants trying to kill you. Unlike your typical FPS, the game is an on-rails shooter, as the player does not control all movements of the game’s hero: your goal is to aim and kill, and the game takes care of moving your player around each level. This may sound like a limitation, but actually works great, as the iPad doesn’t offer the typical controls (pad/keyboard/mouse) a regular FPS requires.
The game’s graphics are simply breathtaking, with an exceptionally fluid 3D engine, and great looking textures. The artwork is amazing, and you will quickly feel immersed in Mutant Bash TV’s gory world. Similarly, the game’s soundtrack and sound effects are just perfect, with witty comments from the show’s host, as well as realistic zombie screams.
As you must have noticed, the game is extremely gore – if you’re not into blood splatters and rotting flesh, this game is not for you! The game’s violence remains constant throughout each episode, so be prepared to mutilate everything that shows up on your screen.
Rage HD is surprisingly cheap, as it only costs $1.99, unlike similar high quality games usually priced around $10. This can be partially explained by the fact that the game is quite short, and depending on the level of difficulty you pick, the game can be finished between one and five hours. Also be prepared to make some room on your iPad, as Rage HD will require a whopping 743 MB of space.
What we liked: Graphics, soundtrack, gameplay, and general ambiance.
What we didn’t like: The game is very large, but surprisingly short.
To buy or not to buy: id Software’s FPS are usually extremely polished and quite fun – Rage HD does not fall short. The graphics are simply amazing, as it’s hard to believe the game runs on an iPad. Even if the game is quite short, the $1.99 price tag makes it an amazing value.
